Marking the launch of original prints Bath Contemporary is proud to present a solo exhibition of work by British painter and print maker Corinna Button.
Using print as only a starting point, it is
the melding of media that really sets Corinna’s practice apart. She uses paint,
line and collage as well as a myriad of different print techniques, scraping
back layers before reapplying new ones. This creates a uniqueness and dynamism
to her work that draws the viewer in. Corinna says ‘My work is about peeling
back layers to reveal something hidden beneath the surface. I don’t always make a print for editioning in the
conventional way. I am constantly in search of freshness, spontaneity,
immediacy of line, rich textures and layers.’
Corinna explores the
social interactions and relationships of both individuals and groups of people,
often women and in threes, with gentle humour and a grain of grit. The effect
is to leave you smiling with the residue of some kind of shared experience.
Following the success of a
major exhibition at the Zhou B Art Centre in Chicago, Sergio Gomez the curator
and director of exhibitions says, ‘Combined with mastery of execution, Corinna
Button conquers our imagination by placing a perennial mirror into our collective
human experience.’
